Get Past Your Limiting Beliefs

Written by Pastor Nichole Moore | October 28, 2023

Sixteen years ago I had a moment with destiny. It was a moment that wasn’t earth shattering, but it changed the course of my life for the better.

The moment happened after a very hurried morning of caring for my baby. I rushed to church to attend a ladies’ morning bible study where I had agreed to lead a table.

Pastor Sheila approached me that morning and asked me to do something I had never done before . . . speak into the microphone and share some announcements with the ladies.

In that moment, there were two conversations that happened: the one in my head and the one coming out of my mouth. The one in my head immediately said—NO WAY. You must be crazy. You picked the wrong chick. You see, I have taken the personality profile tests, and according to them, you don't want me to speak into a microphone.

Didn't she know that I am a "behind the scenes" person?  Didn't she know the results of my personality test? I am a “C” on the DISC test I took, and C's don't do public speaking . . . EVER.

If you are a C personality type like me, you are concerned about quality and accuracy. You want to be right. You like systems and procedures that produce predictable and consistent outcomes. You prefer to work alone. You have very high standards, especially for yourself. You can be a perfectionist, and you struggle with sudden or abrupt change.

From my perspective, Pastor Sheila had picked the worst candidate in the room to give the announcements. But, I said yes, and that decision changed my life forever.

What I didn’t realize before this moment is that I had limiting beliefs that placed a lid on my potential that God never intended.

Are you aware of your limiting beliefs? If not, I want to share four that limit your potential:

1) Limiting thinking patterns that prevent us from renewing our mind in Christ and staying open to the will of God.

2) Limiting people who keep us from pursuing God’s best for our lives either out of fear or ignorance.

3) Limiting habits that squash our productivity.

4) Limiting beliefs that impact the level of our satisfaction.

The truth is that every one of us is born with our own limiting beliefs and labels. You heard some of mine: not sociable, perfectionist, need lots of time to process, struggle with sudden/abrupt change.

The question is not whether or not you have them, but what do they look like in your life and what are you doing about them?

Focus on why you are doing what you are doing. Seek God’s mind and heart for your life. Do not shy away from opportunities to grow your leadership and to improve your inefficiencies. Form good habits. Get around Godly people who help you to grow, and don’t be afraid to say yes to opportunities that come your way.
